The Unseemly Weed

Milkweed serves a purpose,

as nourishment for Monarch caterpillars.

The dandelion makes nice tea;

and also homemade wine.

(I heard from a friend of mine).

The buttercups of my youth

and the grass in between the sidewalks

always brought some kind of joy,

and simple fascination with nature.

So, judge not the common weed,

nor the things in life that seem extraneous,

for everything under the sun has a purpose:

to bring together the old and the new,

recombine the sweet and the sour,

and blend the dark and light hues

of the soul into one.

  1. These lines in particular resonate with me – they remind me of my own youth:
    ‘The buttercups of my youth
and the grass in between the sidewalks
always brought some kind of joy,
    and simple fascination with nature’.
