A Time of Renewal

Rays of the sun follow the dawn

tinting the clouds, pink and blue.

A snapshot of eternity

as manifest in the reality

of an early morning scene

that renders emotions serene.

Tea from the cupboard of life

soothes my soul, minimizes the strife,

that swirls inside of my mind,

bringing comfort in due time.

Reflecting on people and places

missed opportunities and faces;

seems like a universal principle,

that room must be made for the new.

One door closes, and another opens;

as Pesach approaches, the old is removed,

exchanging chometz for matzoh,

bringing renewal to the depths of my soul.

As tears are sanctified by joy,

the troubled years recede into the past,

while the sun rises over Ir HaKodesh

wherein all prayers ascend to G-d.

Scrutiny

In constant awareness

of the painstaking scrutiny –

the soul’s revelation of itself

revealed each and every day.

—– —– —– —–

In mind, body and spirit,

the tripartite makeup of a human being,

the soul finds its expression,

weaving a meaningful tapestry,

while, G-d willing, conscious

of the intricate pattern being woven,

by the Master Artist Above.

—– —– —–

The emotions appear to color

the moments that pass by in reflection,

while I am pointed in a new direction,

with each inhale, exhale, and sigh.

—– —– —–

Living life in the moment

becomes a balancing act of the faculties

of one’s essential self; and with His help,

flows endlessly like a river into the eternal

nature of His grace.

Dreaming of Potential

“In the desert, you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain.”

– A Horse With No Name, by America

In the desert of my life,

when all of the pain and strife,

drifted like dust, behind me on the path,

I began to see the light at last.

And, yet, it is not as you might think,

as if I was brought to the brink,

of my trials and tribulations,

only to find instant redemption.

Rather, the light exposes the darkness,

gradually, within the soul of the penitent with finesse,

bringing understanding in its wake,

to the disillusioned, yet, sated heart.

In my lowliness, I began to see

all of what has been plaguing me;

so, that each pathogen may be brought into the light

for scrutiny under the gaze of G-d’s brightness.

Instead of abandoning my past in denial,

I become transformed through all that is vile

in my personality, turning into its opposite,

like toxic negativity being replaced by virtue.

Ariel

A light shines across the centuries,

 a single thread, weaves a tapestry.

G-d reckons the accounts of all souls,

balancing justice and judgment

with compassion and mercy.

—– —– —– —–

All are known to Him;

for, if each and every one

of the myriad of stars in the universe

is given a name, then how much moreso

is every soul on earth valued

in the eyes of the Creator?

—– —– —– —– —–

Despite assimilation

in a world gone awry,

our lives may be rebuilt

upon the ashes of the past.

Our souls may be redeemed,

by He whose arms are wide open

to receive us into His Sanctuary.

—– —– —– —–

For He is our refuge in times of darkness.

Israel has continuously cried out to Him,

even from the smoldering ruins of the Shoah.

And he will bear us upon the wings of angels,

for all the days of eternity.

in the wake of recent terror attacks:

pray for the peace of Jerusalem

Hope Avails Much

One small act of kindness

can send waves of compassion;

one great act of courage,

can lift up the hearts of many.

Hope prevails amongst us

when we see with eyes of faith,

and hear with the ears of mercy,

turning the darkness into light.

The redemption of our souls,

by way of a guiding light,

reconciles our heart to G-d,

restoring the peace of mind

that we yearn for, throughout our lives.

When a spark is lit inside of us,

by the torch of the eternal flame,

we become the guardians of our own faith,

 and the path to the Kingdom.

Then, we will sing the refrain

of the song of the Redeemer.

The Shoreline

Setting aside selfish sentiments,

to focus attention on the divine,

unearthing hidden resentments –

compelling the soul to transcend over time.

Like the waters on the beach,

receding into the blue ocean,

I would swim as far as I could to reach

a distant shore, where ancient memories blend

with a future envisioned by the prophets,

who saw the distant hope on the horizon,

and directed us to seek, as wisdom saw fit,

the entrance into the kingdom.

—– —– —– —– —–

The currents challenge us to navigate,

while the waves crest high with foam;

and, our arrival can only be estimated

by the tears that fall as we roam.

The promise of a place reserved,

beckons to us from that golden shore,

as we are called to rely on our faith,

to guide us through the door.

Our lives, akin to all who hear the call,

to enter into the ark of refuge,

provided by the One who created all,

to transcend the dystopian deluge.

Winter Hibernation

I am carried back,

to the ground of my existence,

while snuggled inside this cocoon,

waiting in limbo for the renewal

of my soul to take flight.

—– —– —– —– —–

With two feet of snow,

accumulated over the past three days,

this hibernation reminds of quarantine,

when five weeks ago, my soul

shouldered the burden of solitude,

shaking me to the core.

—– —– —– —– —–

The sense of existential dread,

that I felt on the last evening,

before my release from captivity,

ensues, like a pivotal experience,

meant to rearrange my days,

into an exploration

of the primordial intuition,

that followed right before dawn,

garnered my attention,

and persists to reshape my identity,

serving as a compass,

pointing in a new direction.

The Master Artisan

Everything I do is stitched with colors that blend into the tapestry designed by the master artisan, Who weaves, day and night, the dreams that make up our lives. To be in accord with His ways, by adding to the beauty, character, and dimension of the journey, that unfolds in tandem with His plan, the divine blueprint of my life – this takes a listening heart, a humble soul, and an obedience to His will, above and beyond my own.

Yet, dare I let the threads untangle, or willfully take out the stitches already in place, the effort is in vain, and the glory will diminish, rather than remain. Once, at a museum, I stood upon a spiral staircase in awe and wonder at a medieval tapestry on display in a room with a high ceiling, like the scenes of our lives displayed in Heaven.

Guiding Light

If you turn toward the deserts

that have been deprived of rain;

if you step outside of the garden,

instead of singing the divine refrain;

if you cast off the yoke of heaven,

and enter the highways and byways;

if you stray from the narrow path of life,

and travel along the broad way;

following the herd along the beaten road,

instead of taking the road less travelled;

if you give in to the demands of the yetzer hara,

rather than following the promptings of the godly soul;

where will you be led by your own desires,

when you do not seek out what is good?

—– —– —– —– —– —–

If you do not avoid evil, and do what is right,

then what destiny will await you ahead?

Rather, turn toward G-d through teshuvah,

foster a change of heart that will encompass

all that you think, say and do in life;

Then, your world will appear anew,

and return to its original state.

For the things of this world shall not lead us askew,

they are meant to be used in tandem

with the guidelines of moderation,

and the devotion due to Elokim;

lifted up to a place of no regrets,

our hearts are meant to be focused on Him,

so that we may walk in His footsteps.
